Buy a different refrigerator

Happy Thanksgiving, Kitchenaid! Hope you had a wonderful holiday. We celebrated with our Kitchenaid refrigerator conking out for the seventh time in 22 months since purchasing. No leftovers for us!
The issues with our KRFF507ESS01 are many -- fans, harnesses, thermistors, pressure regulators, dampers, a dispenser motor and more. We purchased the extended warranty through Kitchenaid and I'll call them the day after Thanksgiving and they'll tell me how the same part needs to break so many times before they'll consider replacement. Nevermind that different parts breaking causes the same issue: the refrigerator won't cool or freeze. We still have more than two years left on the warranty, so maybe that'll happen, eventually.
On the plus side, we've really gotten to know our local appliance repair company. Their next visit will be the 13th time they've been to our home to service this refrigerator.

I love this fridge! It's sleek, it's sexy - yes I said sexy! I love the metal details added on the inside and I love the adjustable shelves. I also love how quiet it is! The ice maker doesn't makes much noise and it's a pleasant surprise. We've only had it for a couple of weeks but so far so good! I do wish it was finger print resistant and it came it a bigger size but for now it's a great buy!

Within five months of installation the refrigerator fan stopped working and I had to call in a technician to replace the part at my cost because I bought the unit in the USA and shipped it to Trinidad and Tobago where I live.

We bought this in March 2017 and within one year there was an ice buildup behind the pantry drawer, the repairman moved a part in the rear of the refrigerator behind the back panel which was supposed to solve the problem but it has returned twice since. The fridge also goes dark and the repairman suggested we try unplugging the fridge for 2 hrs and then plug it back in to "re-boot" the fridge. This works but it only works for about 2 months before we have to "re-boot" it again.

I have had this refrigerator for less than 3 years and have had to have service techs out to repair it 4 time. First, they shipped the unit with the wrong ice maker motor and auger. I'm guessing there was no Quality Control before it left the manufacturing facility. Second, the unit is loud. I mean just plain loud. The explanation I got from the factory was it's because of the condensers needed for the in-door ice maker. If you want a quiet fridge, this isn't it. Thirdly, the "stainless steel" starting showing signs of rust in the first 10 months. They asked me if I lived near the ocean. No. My other three stainless steel Kitchenaid appliances don't show signs of rust. Had to replace the panel. Now the new panel is also showing signs of rust. Again, none of the other appliances bought at the same time are showing any signs of rust. Lastly, I have a repair team coming put to determine why the unit is not holding a proper temperature. It is warmer on the top of the unit than the bottom. The freezer seems to be ok.

4th time with the same issue. SEVERE ICE BUILD-UP in back of refrigerator. Refrigerator about 2 years old. This is INSANE (fixing the same problem and expecting different results) over and over same components replaced. Read these reviews and beware of purchase. Will not cool properly - have had to discard lots of food and family is getting SICK because of unit not working properly. Ruined hardwood floors and time of work to wait around yet again for service.

Soon after receiving our new refrigerator, we noticed a lot of frost buildup at the freezer door due to the door being warped, so the freezer did not seal when closed. This also affected the ice maker, so that the ice bin was not cold enough, and the ice cubes all stuck together in one big wet clump.
The water dispenser made a "growling" sound when used right from the first day, and had to be repaired.
The water filter mechanism leaked, and flooded our pool table that was in the basement directly below the refrigerator. The refrigerator was replaced, but when the new one came, it had a big scratch on the door. We had to wait weeks to get that replaced.
As far as features, they're pretty similar to other refrigerators. I wish I didn't have to open both French doors at once in order to get at the deli drawer. I have seen other manufacturers' models that have the door separate, and accessible on its own.
There is a sliding shelf that collapses so that tall items can fit under it, if desired, but the shelf collapses if you happen to touch it accidentally while reaching for something, and the items on the shelf fall off.
Overall, it's an okay refrigerator, but it was MUCH more expensive than other similar models, and after seeing all the problems we had with it, I don't think it was worth the additional cost.

As I type this, our KitchenAid is being serviced for the fourth time since January. It won't cool consistently, the frost buildup behind the crisper is unrelenting, and no matter what the repairmen try, it doesn't work as well as the $300 fridge in our garage we bought at a scratch & dent sale.
Of course, it's just about three months out of warranty, so we have a nice stainless steel lemon in our kitchen.
Please don't buy this product. Save yourself the aggravation.

Multiple Issues with this model

Purchased the KRFF507ESS in June 2018. After installation we had a few issues: Metal rattle sound when compressor was running, Freezer door was stiff, chatter noise when dispensing water. Called Kitchenaid who sent out a repair guy. He fixed the metal rattle, replaced the freezer door but couldn't fix the dispenser chatter.
3 months later we noticed the ice building on the vents behind the deli tray and noticed it was unable to cool properly (because the vents were covered in ice). Called Kitchenaid who over the past 9 months send the same repair technician who tried and failed to fix the icing up problem. Thankfully after 1 year of problems, Kitchenaid has agreed to replace the entire refrigerator at no cost to us.

This refrigerator has been a lemon from the start. I purchased it in November 2016, and have had to have the repairman come to my house about every six months to fix various issues. The most common and continuous issue is that the freezer coil ices over and as a result, the refrigerator won't cool, and it stopps making ice. Thank goodness I purchased an extended warranty, however, I don't know how long they'll continue to fix. I'm at a loss as to what to do. I've never spent so much money on an appliance and it's been a nightmare.

We bought this at a very reasonable price (scratch & dent) and are very happy with it. The fruit & veggie bins seem to hold so much more than our old 'frig, and we especially like the easy to grip handles on the doors. Having two split drawers in the freezer is very convenient.
The only issue we've had is getting used to how easily the right hand door opens-it tends to swing a little wildly and crash as it hits the fully open point. We also seem to have a new dent show up in the top of the door-maybe from crashing so hard?
We also have one shelf that tilts downward in one corner when items are placed on it. We thought we hadn't put it in correctly, but it is in the only way it will go. It hasn't caused any problems at this point-just looks a little weird.

Do Not Buy This Refrigerator!
Upset Carolyn

I have never written a bad review before, but after all we have been through, I wanted to warn other people about this refrigerator. We are once again without a refrigerator due to the freezing up of the evaporator behind the deli drawer. There have been 6 claims filed for the same issue. Each claim resulted in multiple visits from repairmen, lost wages due to having to take off work, loss of money having to throw away all the food that spoiled, suffering through food poisoning, and being without a refrigerator for several days each time. The first year that we had the refrigerator, it would not cool right before Thanksgiving. A repairman was sent out who defrosted it and needed to order a part, but thought we would be o.k. until it got there. We threw out all of the food that was purchased for Thanksgiving, and everything else in there. We re- bought everything again and had 35 people over and had no refrigerator! A total disaster! The worst part is people ended up with food poisoning including my elderly parents! I am equally disappointed with the lack of concern shown by Kitchenaid. We have called them repeatedly without any resolution. We purchased the extended warranty, again without any satisfaction either.
It is the same issue every time, they are unable to completely repair the issue, it is a temporary fix.
When I decided to write a review I read others and found that MANY others have been affected with the same manufacturer's design flaw that we have. They also have had no success with Kitchenaid. SO DISAPPOINTED!!!! I will never buy another Kitchenaid product.

I bought this fridge 16 months ago and have already had to have service called on it twice due to frost issues and not cooling properly leading to a lot of thrown out food. If it weren't for those issues the fridge is excellent. Neither time were the fridge doors left open for an excessive amount of time so there is certainly a design flaw with this fridge.

motherboard repaired constantly
Carol 49
5/18/2019
A terrible product. In the first year, we had the motherboard repaired multiple times: once the cooling cut out and we lost all of our food. The lights go on and off. The recommended fix? Throwing the circuit breaker for 5 minutes to reset the board. This is what $3,000 gets you.
Now water is pooling below the vegetable drawer, and it is freezing inside the refrigerator. The water build up is so bad it leaks down and freezes when entering the freezer.
It is the worst refrigerator in terms of performance I have ever heard of.

We started out a bit bumpy with this purchase, but it's all good now! Bought this fridge because the ice maker our old one broke along with a couple shelves, so it was time for a new one. Researched many different ones and settled on this. Got it home and the ice maker didn't work....after several phone calls ( they could use a little help at the call centre with customer service) we had a technician out and the motor was seized ( something he had never seen before) he ordered a new one and was back in a week to fix it and it's working great. In no way did this affect my opinion on the fridge, it's just one of those things that happens. Love the room and the shelving options, tall bottle, just slide the upper shelf back and lots of room for the bottle. Love the bottom drawer for cheese, herbs etc things don't get lost in the big crispers anymore, but a hint when filling it, heavy items to the back of that drawer or it wants to slide open and the door hits it when closing. And just realized I don't have to stand and hold the water button until my glass fills, press 24 ounces and walk away...it's just a little thing but when multi tasking in the kitchen it saves time. First time we have owned a bottom freezer, so I'm still getting used to that, but like it way better than the old side by side.

I bought my Kitchenaid refrigerator about 13 months ago. 6 months in a fan that circulated air through the refrigerator broke. A technician under the manufacturer's warranty was not available for 2 weeks. He quickly identified the problem, and was supposed to arrive the following week with the part but no showed. He didn't arrive because the part was not available, so i had to reach out to Kitchenaid corporate to have them expedite the part to their authorized service center. It took another 2 weeks to schedule a follow up appointment and it finally got fixed.
The refrigerator appears to be breaking down again 6 weeks after the manufacturer's warranty expired, and it appears to be the same issue. Needless to say, a $3,000 refrigerator should work for more than 6 months,it should be fixed well within a month and fixing it should last more than 6 months. Apparently these units had issues with their a/c circulator fans, and one repair / update is supposed to remedy it, but not for us.
Having 2 small children, I want a reliable product, or a least a company that will stand behind its products. I usually don't take the time to write reviews, but i feel so mistreated by KitchenAid after this large purchase that I have to write it. If you do decide to buy it (it's well designed and great when it works) BUY AN EXTENDED WARRANTY, you will likely need it as the company fails to adequate support its products.

Ice build up on condensor

I have had this refrigerator for less than a year. It started making a loud noise. I called a repairman who determined it was ce built up on the condensor. He melted the ice w hairdryer. Told me it was probably due to the door being left open. Approx. 4 months later, the bottom drawer would not close. I determined there was ice build up on the condensor again. I melted w a hairdryer. No replacement parts yet. Hope it doesn't happen again.

I bought this a year and a half ago and needed to call a repairman twice already to fix the fridge as it was not cooling due to ice buildup . Each time i had to argue with Kitchenaid for them to send a repairman .When this happen all of your perishables will need to be disposed of, you need to spend 2 hours on the phone with Kitchenaid, and argue with them to cover the sevice and parts. Now ice is building up a 3rd time, and it is unacceptable that Kitchenaid does not accept responsibility to send new parts or an upgraded model. I always had respect for the Kitchenaid brand name until now. Do not waste your money on this fridge.

Big and Easy to Get Into
MikeWISC
1/14/2019
We have a tight kitchen and wanted to maximize the storage in the fridge for a family to use. We also have obstructions so the drawer and french doors are good options. The storage system is easy to use and flexible. This easily stores more than the prior unit we had of similar cu feet capacity. The freezer drawer works amazingly well. Finish holds up and water dispenser and ice work well.
The unit has different sounds from the compressor and ice maker-not loud but it takes time to get used to. I wish the door hinge had a limit screw; we had to use a bumper, which is fine, but if the door could be adjusted like a Blum hinge it would be better.

Fan Motors and Thermistors fail every 6 mo or less

1/13/2019
Purchased in Feb 2016, and also purchased an extended warranty. Paid $2500. Starting to lose cooling in the main compartment by October. Kitchen Aid repaired as it was under the MFG warranty. Next issue was in June, same problem. 3rd issue August, same problem. By now the warranty co is repairing. We sent a communication to Kitchen Aid to update them and ask if they would consider reimbursing us for lost food costs. The reply was "no". And added this statement.
"KitchenAid continually strives to use only the best components in all of our appliances. Any electrical or mechanical component may deteriorate or malfunction, and we are unable to predict when this might occur."
Needless the say the component failed again 2 more times.
The warranty company worked to reimburse us partially for the refrigerator, and we bought a Frigidaire, hoping to escape the appliance monopoly of Whirlpool. "Smart appliances" are not reliable appliances.

DO NOT BUY, DO NOT FALL FOR EXTENDED WARRANTY
Paul Hallinan
1/4/2019
Very sorry for the long winded review but you need to read about all the trouble we have had. We purchased the unit in April of 2017, our kitchen was being remodeled so we did not actually use it until later. First started noticing issues when the dairy drawer would not close all the way. Removed the drawer and found a huge ice build up on the condenser that is behind the drawer; to the point it was bending some of the plastic and the rails on the drawer. We had purchased the extended warranty because we knew the fridge was going to be sitting idle for a few months and wanted to be safe. Service company came out and advised us we had to defrost the fridge, about 72 hours, prior their return. We ended up purging the food in the fridge and defrosting the unit, going without a refrigerator for about a week. They repaired the issue, and the technician advised that it is actually a common issue for dual condenser models, a quick google search validated this. Almost immediately after this was 'repaired' we began having excessive frost buildup in the freezer unit. We again called repair, who again advised to defrost the unit before they came out. We did not fully purge the unit this time, just the freezer. They repaired this issue. A few months later the control panel stopped working. No ice and water. No interior lights. The unit seemed to be cooling but eventually the ice started melting. We called repair again, but they could not come our for a week (this was just prior to thanksgiving, we had it stuffed with our turkey day food and were expecting company the next day) We found a same day repair company who could come out and fix; they found two boards (power and control) had gone bad. One was covered under warranty but the other was not. Because this was not the kitchen aid warranty vendor we shelled out $250 for the repair. This service tech told us about half of his calls were kitchen aid dual condenser units. The warranty vendor came out, and because the unit was working did nothing, said they could not diagnose. About two weeks before Christmas, happens again. We called for service, again would be about a week. By power cycling a few times it started working again, but would generally stop within a day or two. Because we were not sure how long the food had been without refrigeration we did not trust to eat it, so we lost one more full load of food (including holiday meal food). When service came out they found the condenser ice block buildup again, and diagnosed that was the issue causing the boards to stop working. We had to power down the unit again to defrost, this time we rented a refrigerator from Rent A center so we would be able to have food, but since we had purged everything that was either dairy or opened or partially thawed it didnt get very full. Because of the holidays and trouble getting the parts, we have had the rental monstrosity in our living room until today (January 4th). Service came out and replaced a part, the technician told us again (same guy as first call) that we would likely experience the issue again within 6 months, and to watch for the buildup and make an appointment when it happened. Despite the recurring issue, and our having had to dispose of over $500 worth of food minimum, the warranty company will not classify the unit as non repairable. Kitchen Aid tells us we have to talk to the warranty company, and the warranty company tells us we have to talk to kitchen aid. We have been advised by 3 different service techs that this will happen again, and this is a common issue. I was talking to the warranty department asking if they took their car to a garage to have the engine fixed and the mechanic told them they would need it fixed again in a few month for the same issue would they be happy? Of course the poor people who answer the calls are not the problem. We keep renewing the extended warranty on this unit because at some point it will become more expensive for them to continually send out repair than to finally call this the lemon that it is. And were looking at our legal options for recouping the cost of the rental, the other repair and also the food. I truly hope that the issues we have with our unit is a one off, because we bought an entire suite of Kitchen Aid devices for our new kitchen, if the other units start having issues we're going to seriously deter anyone we know to not buy it. Sad, it used to be such a great and reliable brand.

I want to love this fridge but....
SD19

I want to love this fridge but it has failed too many times for me. We are now on our 2nd visit for repairs because it stops cooling (in < 5 months of use). The first time it stopped was right after I had gone grocery shopping and lost over $300 in food. The next was a week before Christmas and I lost another $200 in food. Plus, it takes 7-10 days before a repair person can get out to look at the fridge and order parts and then another 7-10 days before they can get back out with the part to complete the repair. I love the french door and exterior water/ice. The lighting is nice, adjusting shelves and has a ton of space to store food without the fridge looking full. But the quality is poor...and the long wait times for service is disappointing. I hope this is just a lemon and not all of them have this issue with freezing up and stopping the cooling function.

We bought this refrigerator in May and we already made a 2nd service request due to a sensor issue, which is not allowing the refrigerator to cool enough. We already replaced the sensor in Sept and it is happening again now. I really expected little more quality from KitchenAid than having cooling issue in less than 6 months (twice)

I've had my fridge for five months. I really like the lighing inside. It's nice and bright which makes it easy to see everything. My only issue is with the freezer door which does not close evenly. This causes ice to build up on the side that does not close properly. I've had the Kitchenaid serviceman out and was told it was packaged tighter on one side and it would be ok eventually. The man that connected my icemaker told me the seal on that side is the problem. I will be calling them out again until its fixed.

I usually have the el cheapo refrigerators, never had an issue with any of them. However, with a family of five that kind of refrigerator is just too small. We wanted something with more space and, having little kids, an easier way for them to get ice and water. We have had Kitchen Aid small appliances that have lasted for a long time (Stand mixer is my grandfathers and still works great, hand mixer from 22 years ago works great) so we went with Kitchen Aid for a refrigerator. SEVEN months after purchase the ice maker stopped working with the refrigerator not cooling very well. Someone came out and fixed it. 6-8 months after that, same issue. 6-8 months after that, same issuewith the refrigerator/freezer not cooling properly. Here it is, 9 months after the last fix and ice maker isn't working and refrigerator/freezer is not cooling properly, AGAIN. I'm told I now have to pay to have it looked at and then pay again to have it fixed. This refrigerator is either built to be a money pit or obviously defective. I'm told they "Strive for years of excellent performance". Years of excellent performance, HA! I haven't had ONE year of excellent performance since purchase. DO NOT BUY THIS REFRIGERATOR IF YOU DO NOT WANT TO BE SINKING MONEY INTO IT FREQUENTLY. This is a defective, expensive refrigerator that I would not wish on anyone.

Nice large fridge!

Very pleased with our purchase. Very large, bright with cool features such as the measure fill and pizza box are in the freezer. Giving it 4 stars because we did have an issue with the motherboard which was quickly fixed, a squeaky door which was also quickly addressed and the stainless steel is a bit of a issue when kids filling up their water cups. Sometimes it's hard to keep on cleaning every little mark. Water leaves a bit of a mark and/or spotty at times. I've always purchased kitchenAid and I've always been happy with my purchase. Will continue to shop KA.

I bought one new 2 years ago it had. Had trouble with
Freezer not closing tight in 1st year. This past summer it quit cooling below 50 degrees because the evaporator was freezing up. They were unable fix the problem after
Replacing many parts over a 4 month period.
Warranty co replaced it with this new one.same model #.
Hope this one turns out better!
